The Astrid Lindgren Company
Astrid Lindgren’s children and grandchildren own The Astrid Lindgren Company. There are currently 16 people employed by the company, most of whom are experts in different fields of copyright. We are based in Stockholm, but our work covers the globe. The foundation on which our work is built is the love of Astrid Lindgren and her work. We are convinced that the world needs Astrid Lindgren - perhaps now more than ever before.
Our goal
Our mission is to protect and spread Astrid Lindgren’s oeuvre worldwide. We want to find the best ways for as many children and adults as possible, across the globe, to be able to read Astrid Lindgren’s books, watch her films or theatre plays, hear her songs, and discover her worlds. We support partners and projects that feature her writing from new and exciting perspectives. We conduct ourselves according to Astrid Lindgren’s own, very clear, guiding principles of what may, can, and should be done. In a fast-changing media landscape like the one we’re currently experiencing, the possibilities are endless. We spend a lot of time finding the right channels, modes of expressions and new formats for Astrid Lindgren’s work.
Our values
Quality
Astrid Lindgren had high demands on quality - both in what she created herself and what others did to her work. We always strive for the highest quality possible in everything we do.
The Child’s Perspective
An important reason why Astrid Lindgren has become so loved is that she never talked over the heads of children. The child’s perspective is always the central focus. And so it remains in our work.
Reliability
Astrid Lindgren was a woman that always kept her word and built strong partnerships based on trust. When you enter into a partnership with The Astrid Lindgren Company you should feel as if you are working with us towards a common goal.
Respect for others
In her life and in her books Astrid Lindgren demonstrated an unusual amount of moral courage. She treated everybody the same and showed equal amount of respect towards a young reader as she did towards a head of state. We follow in her footsteps and approach the world around us with honesty and respect.
Curiosity
No great art or literature is ever created without curiosity. No man, or company, is an island. We are open to individuals and ideas, whether or not the discussion actually leads to real collaborations.
Professionalism
For a long time Astrid Lindgren managed her own affairs. In addition to her writing she also worked as a publisher and a manager. She was diligent in getting compensated properly for her work and just as diligent making sure others also were. The value of the rights we control is high, both in monetary terms and from a goodwill perspective, and we aim to make good and professional deals.
Generosity
During her lifetime Astrid Lindgren donated large sums of money to good causes. She used her voice to speak up for the weak and vulnerable and protested against injustices and oppression. It goes without saying that we, therefore, should share some of our profits with organisations that work with children’s rights across the world.
Board
The board of The Astrid Lindgren Company consists of (2024): Nils Nyman (chair), Anders Lindgren, Cilla Nergårdh, Ingrid Jonasson Blank and Lars Blomgren.
Company history
When Astrid Lindgren published her first books in the beginning of the 1940s no one realised what an enterprise she had set in motion. For as long as Astrid Lindgren was alive and in good health she managed her own rights. For many years she did so by herself, and then later with her trusted colleague Kerstin Kvint. The company that came to be the basis for The Astrid Lindgren Company was founded at the end of the 1960s. This company was called ‘Tre Lindgren’ and managed the rights to film, television and theatre productions. The name referred to Astrid Lindgren herself, as well as her son and daughter-in-law who worked for the company. Astrid, the author, however, waited until 1998 before starting the company that would manage her literary rights. That company was named ‘Saltkråkan’ after the book Seacrow Island. The two companies were later merged and are now owned by Astrid Lindgren’s descendants. During the spring of 2018 it changed name from ‘Saltkråkan AB’ to The Astrid Lindgren Company.
